Syene II.

More than 2500 years ago, on the east bank of the Nile, opposite the Pharaonic town of Elephantine on the island of the same name, the town of Syene, predecessor of today’s Assuan, came into existence. The partner towns formed the gateway to Nubia and Central Africa. They lay on the route of most trade expeditions on their way to procure gold, ivory and other goods for Egypt and the whole Mediterranean. Due to their strategic importance at the south border of the country both towns must also be seen as permanent military strong-points undergoing continuous change in the composition of their inhabitants: soldiers and mercenaries as well as merchants of many nations lived there for shorter or longer periods and brought their respective cultural and religious traditions to the First Cataract. While Elephantine provides an almost complete insight into the first two and a half millennia of Egyptian history, the exploration of Syene builds a bridge via the Islamic Middle Ages to the Modern Era.
The examination of faunal remains from the excavations of the “Schweizerisches Institut für Ägyptische Bauforschung und Altertumskunde” in Kairo in cooperation with the Assuan inspectorate of the Egyptian Ministry of Antiquities allows a deep view, from the Late Period of ancient Egypt until the 15th century A.D., into the ways that the inhabitants of Syene made use of animals. So far the archaeozoological exploration of Egypt lacks a study of skeletal material of that time span as well as of domesticated and wild animals from all families: this volume closes the gap, at least for the area around the First Cataract.
The presentation of the material according to the identified species is accompanied by a detailed description of the methodological background as well as by comparisons with faunal studies all over Egypt from Pharaonic times to the Modern Age. The ideas discussed with regard to individual species are supplemented by the interpretation of the complete material as to changes in the ways of utilizing domesticated animals, as to preferences in the diet or as to knowledge of breeding. Faunal remains are also used as a possible means of information about trade routes to and from Assuan in the course of the roughly 2500 years of the town’s history. A special attempt has been made to throw light on the questions after shelter for the animals, the supply with fodder and the size of the herds of domesticated animals needed for the meat part in the diet of Syene’s inhabitants.

Syene III. Untersuchungen zur römischen Keramik und weiteren Funden aus Syene / Assuan (1.-7. Jahrhundert AD). Grabungen 2001 — 2004.
With contributions by Sylvia Fünfschilling, Daniel Keller and Johanna Sigl.
Beiträge zur ägyptischen Bauforschung und Altertumskunde, Band 20.

Syene (Aswan) was the southern-most town of the Roman Empire. Since the year 2000, systematic rescue excavations have been carried out by the Swiss Institute of Architectural and Archaeological Research on Ancient Egypt in Cairo, in cooperation with the Ministry of Antiquities.
The pottery studied in this volume comes from stratigraphically well-observed archaeological structures of the excavations from the 1st to 4th campaigns and was analysed within the framework of a project of the University of Berne, Institut für Archäologische Wissenschaften, Archäologie der Römischen Provinzen.
The work is divided into four parts A-D, with a substantial summary in English:
Part A: structures, contexts, catalogue of pottery and plates.
Part B: pottery, relative and absolute chronology; types; synthesis.
Part C: glass, metal and bone artefacts, animal bones.
Part D: annex (pottery): bibliography, typological series; color plates.

For the first time for Upper Egypt, characteristic, chronologically valid contexts of pottery can now be observed. Furthermore, from the later 1st century BC up until the 7th century AD a typological development for many forms can be traced. Finally, the analysis of the pottery yields results and perspectives on trade and cultural developments.

Merenptah V. Konservierungsarbeiten und Herrichtung des Grabungsplatzes.
With contributions of Hans Ettl und Horst Schuh.

Aegyptiaca Hamburgensia — Band 3

The study treats 85 Late Egyptian coffins proceeding from the town of Achmim. Each coffin is presented individually, including information about the owner, descriptions of the pictorial representations and translations of all inscriptions. A comparison of all decorations shows that most coffins were decorated with one out of five different patterns. The patterns are described and dated taking into consideration the respective iconographic, linguistic and epigraphic characteristics; in this way, all coffins could be dated. The prosopographic information inscribed on the coffins allows conclusions about the provenance, family relations and careers of the male and female owners of the coffins.

Der verborgene Königsmythos von Edfu. Wiederentdeckung eines Konzepts dreidimensionaler Literatur>br /> Aegyptiaca Hamburgensia — Band 4

The upper three registers on the outside of the side walls of the temple house at Edfu contain 104 scenes of rituals and sacrifices, which are thematically connected. The present study shows that – contemplated as a whole – the suggested mythical motifs tell about the kingdom of the gods, about the rule of Horus and his divine predecessors. The connection among the mythical motifs is demonstrated as well as their integration into the overall concept. Just as in a mythical narrative the motifs follow upon each other chronologically and appear on the outer wall of the temple house in their sequence from back (area of the sanctuary) to front (hypostyle hall); the groups of rooms inside the temple invisibly order the voluminous array of scenes on the walls into chapters.

Edfou VI.
Die Inschriften des Tempels von Edfu. Abteilung I Übersetzungen — Band 3

The volume offers translations, transcriptions and philological commentaries of the texts written on the inner face of the enclosure wall of the temple of Edfu. The texts are among the most interesting of the temple texts. They treat, for example, the complex of the myth of Horus, the creation myths, the description of the original temple of Edfu, or the selection and enthronement of the living falcon of Edfu. In addition, the volume contains four short appendices with special studies and supplements to the translations as well as 29 pages of additions and corrections with regard to the hieroglyphic text edited by É. Chassinat, Le temple d'Edfou VI.

„Habt Ehrfurcht vor der Gottheit NN“ — Die śnd-n-Hymnen in den ägyptischen Tempeln der griechisch-römischen Zeit
Die Inschriften des Tempels von Edfu — Begleitheft 2

The śnd-n hymns that Stefan Rüter examines in this publication are preserved in a great number of texts from nine temples dating to Greco-Roman times. The understanding of the hymns is much enhanced not only by a consecutive translation of almost all sources but especially by the analytical scrutiny of the texts` statements and the subsequent interpretation. Going beyond the immediate aim of the investigation the textual analysis offers an insight into problems of Greco-Roman temple inscriptions: on the one hand there is the question after the manner, provenance and diffusion of the texts, on the other hand the question after the relationship between religious ideas accepted all over Egypt and their many local manifestations.

EDFU: Neue Graffiti und Ritualszenen des Tempels von Edfu.
Die Inschriften des Tempels von Edfu — Abteilung II Dokumentationen, Band 2

With one article by Andreas Effland

In the six articles making up this documentary volume are edited hitherto unpublished graffiti and hieroglyphic texts. To begin with, there are three ritual scenes that were discovered in the corridor at the entrance to the eastern pylon: they contribute to the building-history of the temple. There follow ritual scenes from a foundation wall, which belong to the decoration of the second court of Mammisi. The next article is concerned with demotic assembly marks of the temple of Edfu, mainly preserved on the bridge connecting the pylons. They allow an insight into the technical planning and the construction of the temple. The following article considers the remains of a small cult building seven decorated blocks of which are preserved in situ close to the northwest corner of the big temple and had not yet been studied in detail. Next are edited several hieratic, demotic and Coptic graffiti, followed by graffiti from the times of Napoleon’s Egyptian expedition. The contents of the volume makes it clear that the exploration of the big temple at Edfu is far from terminated, neither for the evaluation of the inscriptions nor for the documentation.
